Preference Lists

Overview

One way to ensure that relevant, interesting messages are delivered to your recipients is to give users control over the types of messages they receive. Preference Lists can include any kind of communication that a recipient wants to receive. Some common examples are:

  • Newsletter
  • Marketing Updates
  • Product News
  • Company Information

Sugar Market's Preference Lists and Preference Page allow users to opt-in to the lists and content they find most valuable. By giving users control over their content, you can ensure they are receiving pertinent information, improve content engagement, increase open and click rates, and reduce your number of unsubscribes.

Before you get started, make sure your Sugar Market role and user account have permissions to access Preference Lists and your Preference Page. The correct permissions display the following menu options:

  • Expand the navigation bar > Lists module > Preference Lists
  • Expand the navigation bar > Lists module > Preference Lists > click the Preference Page icon in the toolbar.

If you do not see these options, then please request permission from your Sugar Market account administrator or Sugar Market Support.

Creating and Managing Preference Lists

The first step to creating a great Preference experience for your recipients is to create the Preference Lists from which they can opt-in and out. To access your Preference Lists:

  2. Identify an internal name for your list and, optionally, a description.
  3. Click the Create button. The Preference List is now created and ready to be populated with recipients. Choose one of the following methods to add recipients:

Creating and Managing the Preference Page

When a user receives an email containing a link to manage their preferences, they are presented with your customized Preference Page:

This page is the result of your Page, Lists, Listeners, and Merge Fields setup. Users can opt-in and out of any list or globally unsubscribe from all communication. When a user changes their status, their Preference List status updates on the Preference List page.

To create or update a Preference Page:

  1. Click the open button at the top of the navigation bar to view all available modules.
  2. Click the Lists module.
    navlistsopen
  3. Click the Preference Lists submodule.
    preftab
  4. Click the Preference Page icon in the toolbar.
    prefpage
  5. Set the public-facing name of your Preference Page and a description that tells your users what to expect from managing their preferences and their subscriptions.
  6. Click the Add List button to select the Preference Lists to add to the page for user subscription. Each list you add can contain a user-facing external name and description that will help guide users to understand what each subscription includes.
  7. Click the "Activate" button to publish the page. If you decide at any time to make the page private, simply click the Deactivate Page button and your Preference Page will no longer be publicly accessible to any user.

Adding to Preference Lists with Listeners

The lead/contact Listener is a powerful tool that you can use to automate the sales and marketing process. Sugar Market listens for new and updated values in a contact record. Based on these changes and present conditions, Sugar Market can take numerous actions such as adding a contact to a campaign and removing a contact from a list.

To include Preference Lists in a listener:

  1. Create an event listener.
  2. In the Listener Actions section, select "Add to Preference List", and then identify the specific preference page.

Including Preference Lists in Email Campaigns

Use your preference lists in single email campaigns to include or exclude lists according to preferences.

To use a preference list in email campaigns:

  1. Create an email campaign.
  2. On Step 4 of the builder, select "Preference" as the list type in the include or exclude section.

The key to connecting your Preference Lists to your user experience comes through merge fields. Add a Preference Page merge field to your email campaigns to give users the choice to opt-in and out of lists or to globally unsubscribe from all communications. Please refer to the Email Campaigns documentation to learn more about using the preference page merge tag.
